Tariff Rules

Purpose

This article explains how Admins configure Tariff Rules in the Thulo Logistics Module.

Tariff Rules define how shipping charges are calculated based on package weight, dimensions, and predefined rate rules. These rules are automatically applied when creating Locker Packages and Shipments.

Who This Is For

  • Admins

  • Finance / Pricing Managers

  • Operations Managers

Required Permissions

  • Logistics → Settings → Edit

  • User Management → Admin access

What Tariff Rules Are Used For

Tariff Rules are used to:

  • Automatically calculate logistics charges

  • Apply consistent pricing across operations

  • Determine invoice amounts for:

    • Locker Packages

    • Shipments

Tariff Rules are the primary pricing mechanism in the Logistics Module.

How Tariff Calculation Works (Important)

The system calculates charges using:

  • Actual Weight

  • Volumetric Weight

The higher value of the two is used for pricing.

Volumetric Weight is calculated using package dimensions and a predefined formula.

The applicable tariff rule is then selected based on:

  • Weight range

  • Configured tariff conditions

Where Tariff Rules Apply

Once configured, Tariff Rules are applied during:

  • Locker Package creation

  • Shipment creation

  • Invoice generation

Staff cannot manually override tariff-based charges during processing.

Step-by-Step: Create a Tariff Rule

Step 1: Navigate to Tariff Rules Settings

Go to Logistics → Settings → Tariff Rules.

(keep your existing screenshot here)

Step 2: Define Tariff Conditions

Configure tariff details such as:

  • Weight range (minimum and maximum)

  • Rate or charge value

  • Applicable conditions (as supported by the system)

Each rule should clearly define when it applies.

Step 3: Save the Tariff Rule

Click Save to create the tariff rule.

After saving:

  • The rule becomes active for future packages and shipments

  • Pricing is applied automatically during creation

How Tariff Rules Affect Invoices

  • Tariff Rules determine the base shipping charge

  • Taxes and currency conversion may be applied on top

  • Final invoice amount is system-calculated

Existing invoices are not recalculated if tariff rules are changed.

Important Rules to Know

  • Tariff Rules are tenant-wide

  • Only one applicable tariff is applied per package or shipment

  • Changes affect future records only

  • Manual price editing is not supported

Best Practices

  • Configure tariff rules before starting operations

  • Clearly define weight ranges without overlap

  • Test tariff behavior with sample packages

  • Review tariffs periodically for accuracy

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Overlapping weight ranges

  • Changing tariffs mid-operation

  • Expecting tariffs to apply retroactively

  • Confusing tariff rules with taxes or currency rates

The tariff fee will be automatically applied based on the actual weight or the volumetric weight, whichever is greater. Tariff fee will be calculated and applied on each Package Description line.

Tariff rule applies to Locker Package, Shipping, Pickup, Consolidate.

Step 1. Go to Settings à Tariff Rules à Create rules like below:

Step 2. Create transactions and enter appropriate package weight and dimensions.

Example:

Rule 1: From 1kg – 5 kg: tariff fee= 3$

Rule 2: From 5kg – 15 kg: tariff fee= 5$

Rule 3: From 15kg - 30 kg: tariff fee= 11$

Calculate and determine the volumetric weight and actual weight of each pack

Weight Vol.  = Length * Width * Height / Volume percentage  . Volume percentage =  6000cm3/kg, this number is configured in Taxes setting.

Pack 1: Weight Vol = 10 * 5 * 5 /  6000 = 0.04 kg. Actual Weight = 3kg Chargeable weight is 3 kg -> Tariff fee = 3$

Pack 2: Weight Vol = 20 * 30 * 50 /  6000 = 5 kg. Actual Weight = 3kg Chargeable weight is 5 kg -> Tariff fee = 5$

Pack 3: Weight Vol = 50 * 50 * 40 /  6000 = 16.67 kg. Actual Weight = 31 kg Chargeable weight is 31 kg -> Tariff fee = 11 $

Note:

-          - If the weight exceeds the highest range set in the tariff rules, the maximum tariff fee will be applied.

-          - Tariff fee will be added to the Total of the transaction.
